Helen Keller International (HKI), an International NGO, has been working in Bangladesh since 1978. HKI implements different projects in partnership with national and international NGOs, development partners, academic and research institutions, and private sectors. HKI takes a gender-sensitive approach to improving nutrition, food security and eye health. Current program areas include Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Nilphamari, Sylhet, Chittagong and the CHT.
HKI is seeking to recruit the following position based in Dhaka.
Job Title : Social Behavior Change & Communications (SBC&C) Specialist
Job Location : Dhaka with at least 10% field visit
Reporting to : Manager - Communications
Term length : This is a regular full time position
Scope of Responsibilities:
The social behavior change & communications (SBC&C) specialist will assist with formative research. One salient part of the SBC&C Specialist’s role will be to develop and roll out comprehensive behavior change communications strategies in support of HKI projects to address critical behaviors related to improved nutrition practices, equitable gender relations, recognition of common childhood illnesses, severe/acute malnutrition, and eye health, among other issues that will facilitate the program in achieving its overall objective of gender equitable food security. However, the SBC&C specialist will contribute to the production of all SBC&C materials needed for successful implementation of HKI projects. S/he will support field testing and adapt all new and current SBC&C materials, build a framework for active monitoring of the SBC&C activities and assist in the implementation process. Reporting of activities, and ability to design communication materials will be required.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the overall formative research to inform social behavior change & communication strategy and develop a culturally appropriate and harmonized SBC&C strategy and tools necessary for promoting positive change within the beneficiaries.
  • Lead additional research initiatives as/when necessary to develop or adapt SBC&C materials to be used in HKI programs.
  • Develop culturally appropriate differentiated SBC&C materials and tools for men, women, elderly, persons with disabilities and adolescents on behaviors related to improved health and nutrition, financial literacy, economic growth and disaster risk reduction (DRR).
  • Review existing BCC and community engagement strategies, knowledge base, information, education and communication (IEC) materials, practices and identify the gaps in SBC&C in the region with emphasis on the most vulnerable populations, offering practical recommendations to respond to the gaps, developing and/or adapting existing materials.
  • Map out a comprehensive plan for IEC/SBC&C activities, develop and manage the approved budget and coordinate with other actors to ensure successful implementation.
  • Document the process, issues, challenges and recommendations for improvements/scaling up IEC/BCC and community mobilization interventions in the targeted working upazilas.
  • Provide expertise in social science methods for monitoring and evaluation of BCC, community mobilization and advocacy.
  • Update, design and train staff on the use of new materials on a regular basis.
  • Support preparation of and participate in relevant project events/workshops/meetings.
  • Provide support in the training activities on SBC&C, community mobilization, advocacy for the program and partners.
  • Collect information within and outside the organization that will be used in communicating news, lessons learned, best practices, success stories and research findings to each relevant audience.
  • Assist in technical reporting to the donor and other relevant partners, and in dissemination of results to wider audiences, including social media platforms.
  • Ensure timely effective communications within the organization and with stakeholders of all levels.
  • Establish effective relationships with partners and local stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • A Master degree from a recognized university, in communications, marketing, psychology, behavioral science or other relevant field
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in SBC&C.
  • Fluency in Bangla and English.
  • A very high standard of communication skills; interpersonal, intercultural, and overall social skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with communities, households and/or masses in relation to behavior change. It can be within advertising, PR, Government work, or in the development and cooperation field, NGOs, etc.
  • Experience leading or assisting with formative research to develop or adapt BCC strategies and/or materials.
  • Creativity drawing on evidence based information to develop appropriate SBC*C products.
  • Ability to transform complex or general scientific ideas/facts into simple and specific messages.
  • Experience working with USAID or other donor funded programs.
  • Experience working in food security programs in a SBC&C/BCC role.
  • Experience in writing strategies for long-term projects, programs or large scale sales.
